Have the students tell if the problem and answer combinations are true or false.
Explain that in division problems with a number to 1,000 with remainder you first see what number from the table of the divisor comes the closest to but less than the dividend. With the problem 242 ÷ 4 you are looking for the largest number you can take away from the dividend. 6 × 4 = 24. So 60 × 4 = 240. Subtract the 240 from the 242. You now have 2 left over. You can no longer divide 2 by 4. So 2 is your remainder. Have the students solve the following division problems on their own. She the problem with Judy and solve the problem by following the steps. Emphasize that the remainder consists of 3 children, so they would not get chocolate. But all of the children have to get a piece of chocolate, so Judy needs to buy 1 extra package. Therefore the answer is not 43 R 3, but 44. Have the students solve the next couple division problems on their own. Then walk the students through the steps of solving a division problem. Have the students solve the next two story problems on their own.
Check whether the students can divide a number to 1,000 with remainder by asking the following question:

The students test their understanding of dividing a number to 1,000 with remainder through ten exercises. For some of the exercises, the students are given possible answers to select from, and for other exercises they must provide the answer to the division problem on their own.
