In this lesson, students will be introduced to many different kinds of dinosaurs, such as the triceratops, Tyrannosaurus rex, and brachiosaurus. They will also discuss different animal diets (e.g., omnivore, herbivore, carnivore), and use the three distinctions to classify some of the most well-known types of dinosaurs. Students will discuss the process of fossilization and learn about living dinosaur descendants.
NGSS: 3-LS4-1
Students will be able to describe different types of dinosaurs, animal diets, and a possible reason why dinosaurs went extinct.
Students will discuss which pets have the most in common with dinosaurs and which features they have in common. They will learn why it is important to study dinosaurs.
Students will discuss how humans know about dinosaurs and how we have gathered information about them from fossils. They will look at images of dinosaur teeth and hypothesize about the correlation between their teeth and the kinds of food they ate. They will then learn about eight different types of dinosaurs: the triceratops, archaeopteryx, tyrannosaurus rex, allosaurus, pachycephalosaurus, spinosaurus, brachiosaurus, and ankylosaurus. They will also learn about how dinosaurs went extinct.
Review dinosaurs with 4 true/false questions and 6 multiple-choice questions.
Students will reflect on the different dinosaur traits they learned about. After that, they will pretend they’re paleontologists and write or draw about a new dinosaur discovery.
