In this lesson, students will practice reading passages and identifying their main ideas and supporting details.

Students will be able to identify several main ideas and connect the supporting details.
Explain that authors of informational texts write true texts that provide readers with facts, details, and information about a specific topic. Students will discuss what main idea is.
Students will look at different strategies to find the main idea, including reading the title and looking at headings and pictures. They will look at key details that may include examples and facts.
Students will read a passage titled, "Igneous Rock," and find the main idea and key details. Next, they will read a passage titled, "Sedimentary Rocks" and find the main ideas of both paragraphs and discuss them with a partner.
Students will answer ten questions in which they review key concepts and determine if text given is a main idea or supporting detail.
Students will recall what they learned in this lesson:
- How do good readers determine the main idea of a text?
- How do authors support the main idea in an informational text?
Students will read a passage titled, "Apples, Apples, Apples!" and find the main idea and underlines the details that connect to the main idea.
