General
Students are introduced to narrative writing and its purpose. They will learn that good writers develop the events and experiences in a story by adding details such as descriptions of the actions, thoughts, and feelings of the characters. They will practice using juicy words to help strengthen their descriptions. The lesson includes a printable worksheet.

Learning Objective
Students will be able to use dialogue and descriptions of actions, thoughts, and feelings to develop experiences and events or show the response of characters to situations.
Introduction
Students will observe a picture/diagram with labels/captions describing and showing a character performing an action, thinking a thought, and showing a feeling. Students will drag to label each as action, thought, and feeling. Then review narrative writing and show students some “juicy words” they can use to write about a character’s actions, thoughts, and feelings.
Instruction
The lesson includes the following activities:
- Sorting: A sentence box is shown with various descriptions. Three boxes to the right are labeled actions, thoughts, feelings. Students have to drag and sort the descriptions into the correct box.
- Graphic organizer: Students will read a short story. Students have to find an example of a description of an action, thought, and feeling and add them to the graphic organizer.
- “Mad libs” activity: A prewritten narrative is displayed. There will be blank lines with a label of what type of word or phrase needs to be written there. Students can be creative and as silly as they want. Then they can read the whole story when they’re done.
- Students will be given a picture to generate ideas to inspire a narrative story to outline. They will be given a graphic organizer that requires them to fill in the character, setting, events and actions, thoughts, and feelings.
- Story starter: Students will be given a story starter. Students will finish the story while including all necessary components of a narrative story (characters, setting, beginning, middle, end) and descriptions of the actions, thoughts, and feelings.
Quiz
Students respond to 10 questions that review the key concepts given in the lesson.
Closing
Students write their own narratives and will be given a checklist to help guide their writing. Students will also be provided a spinner to help them generate ideas/topics of what to write their narrative about if they’re stumped before writing. Students will be provided with an accompanying worksheet of lined paper and a checklist to write their narratives on.
