In this lesson, students will learn about the different ways to decompose numbers up to 10.
CCSS.MATH.Content.K.OA.A
Students will be able to decompose and add numbers up to 10.
Students will count three sets of objects. Explain why it is useful to know how to decompose groups of objects in different ways.
Explain how decomposition works with the example, "3 and 3 makes 6." Students can use different strategies to decompose, such as using one number of the equation (an addend) and determining how many more have to be added.
Students will then practice decomposing 7 by dragging 7 fish to 2 different fishbowls. Next, they will look at all the different ways they could have decomposed 7. They will read through each way and look at the numbers.
They will also learn how to express the decomposition with a number bond. They will decompose groups of images, like squirrels and cats. Remind students they can use manipulatives to help them visualize as well.
Students will respond to nine fill-in-the-blank questions.
Students will practice decomposing more groups of objects, like tomatoes and oranges.
