In this lesson, students will learn about covalent and ionic bonds using dot diagrams and electron models.
NGSS: MS-PS1-1
Students will be able to explain why some elements form ionic bonds and some form covalent bonds.
Students will review dot diagrams and create one or two for practice.
Students will use previous electron models to describe how ionic bonds are created through the transfer of electrons. They will then discuss which groups tend to form ionic bonds. We’ll also cover some general properties of ionic compounds. Students will do some practice problems that show how ions form when electrons are transferred. They will contrast ionic bonds with the formation of covalent bonds. They will also discuss how covalent form and which elements tend to form them. Lewis dot diagrams will be used to show how elements share electrons.
Review the lesson with 8 multiple-choice questions and 2 dot diagram questions.
Students will recall what they learned by naming key differences between ionic and covalent bonds.
