General

Students learn to count forward and backward by ones through 100.

Standards

CCSS.Math.Content.1.NBT.A.1

Learning objective

Students will be able to count forward and backward by ones from any number through 100. Students know which numbers come before and after 100.

Introduction

The interactive whiteboard has a number line that starts at 0 and ends at 100. Think of a number (optionally write it down somewhere). Then ask students to name numbers between 0 and 100. You can write them on the number line, or ask students to write them on the number line. You tell students if the number they chose is greater or less than the number you thought of. When your number is greater than the given number, cross off the number line below the student's number. If it is less than the given number, cross off the number line above the student's number. This leaves the portion of the number line in which your number can be found. Continue doing so and the number line will keep shrinking allowing students to determine your number. You can repeat this and encourage students to be strategic, by for example selecting a number like 50 first, so that half of the number line is removed in one go.

Instruction

Explain to students that the number 100 comes after the number 99 and that you get one more digit. Explain to the class that when you count through 100, you start again at 1, but then with one hundred in front. You can show this by circling the ninety nine and show that it’s 9 tens and 9 ones. Then outline the 100 eggs, showing that it’s 10 tens or 1 hundred. Finally, circle the entire 101 eggs, and show that it has one group of 1 hundred, no extra tens, and 1 extra one - just like the number written in standard form. This can also be shown with the progression of numbers after 100, the number in the ones place changes- (101 - 102 - 103). You can continue counting from 98 in the balls shown on the interactive whiteboard. You can ask the students to write along with you on the board. Next a few number sequences are shown on the interactive whiteboard. Students must fill in the missing numbers on the flags. The first is counting forward, the second counts backward.

Check that students are able to count through 100 by asking the following questions:
- Which number comes after 99?
- Which number comes after 100?
- What changes when you count past 99?

Quiz

Students are given exercises in which they must count through 100. They are asked to count forward and count backward. They sometimes must simply continue counting in a sequence and other questions ask them to fill in the missing number.

Closing

Discuss with students that it is important to be able to count through 100, so you can learn how to calculate. The interactive whiteboard has a few number sequences with numbers missing. Ask students to drag the missing numbers to where they belong in the sequence. To check the answers, you can ask them to write along on their own sheets of paper/mini whiteboards and hold up their answers.

Teaching tips

Students who have difficulty with this learning goal can be supported by giving them a set of number cards from 98-102 and asking them to set them in order. This helps build familiarity with the correct sequence. You can also use manipulatives and have them take one more for each count forward.
