Students learn to count forward and backward from any number to 20.

Relevance
Discuss with students that it is important to be able to count forward and backward from any number up to 20.
Introduction
Start with a game in which students sit in a circle with the teacher and hold hands. The teacher gently squeezes the hand of the neighboring student, and they in turn must pass along the same number of squeezes to their neighbors. The last student in the circle must say how many squeezes they felt.
Development
Remind students that being able to count forward and backward is useful so that you can, for example count how many students are in a group. Use the rows of t-shirts on the interactive whiteboard to practice counting forward to 20. Then have students practice counting forward by turns to 20, first starting at 1, then at the other given numbers. Ask students to drag the given numbers to where they belong in the number sequence. Then use the t-shirts on the interactive whiteboard to have students practice counting backward from 20. Have students get into line shoulder to shoulder and to count backward by turns. Then ask students to determine which numbers are missing in the number sequence. Then ask students to determine which numbers belong in the circles, check by erasing the grey circles.
Guided practice
Students are asked to count forward and backward from the given numbers. Students are also given one problem in which they must determine which number is missing from a given sequence.
Closing
Remind students that they can use counting forward and backward to 20 from any given number to count people or objects in their surroundings. Ask students what things in their surroundings they like to count, and why it can be useful to count things. As a class have students count by turns going forward until the teacher says "stop" at which point the students must start counting backward. Repeat a few times from different numbers.
