Relevance
Discuss with students that they need to be able to count forwards and backwards to 100 to be able to do math later.
Introduction
Practice counting to 100. Give a starting number and have students count on by turns to 100. Tell the students that they have to count slower sometimes and faster sometimes. Try to get the class to count as slowly as possible and as quickly as possible.
Development
Count from 51-60 while pointing at the numbers on the number line. Ask students to count out loud with you. Then ask the students to count from 61 to 70. Then show the remaining number line to 100. If they are very familiar with a portion of the number line, you can count it quickly as a class. Next count as a class from a given starting number. Indicate when the students must stop with counting. Then drag the numbers to their correct places on the number line. Tell students that you can also count backwards from 100. Count backwards, pointing at the numbers on the number line and ask students to count out loud with you. Count a few rows together. Next ask students to count backwards from a given number. Indicate when the students must stop with counting backwards. Make sure that every student gets a turn. Students must then indicate which numbers are missing on the number line. It is important that they use backwards counting here. To practice counting forwards and backwards, there are a few numbers on the interactive whiteboard and students must write which number comes before and after that number. Ask students to hold their answers up in the air so you can check their work.
Check that student are able to count forwards and backwards to 100 by asking the following questions:
- How do you count forwards?
- How do you count backwards?
- Which number comes after 73?
- Which number comes before 91?
Guided Practice
Students first practice counting forwards, then they must fill in numbers in the number line, and finally they practice counting backwards.
Closing
Discuss with students that it is important to be able to count forwards and backwards to 100 because they need this to do math later and check that they are able to do so. Ask students to practice counting forwards and backwards in groups. The interactive whiteboard has a table of 100 which has been partially filled in. Students discuss in their groups which numbers are missing and count forwards and backwards to complete the table.
Teaching Tip
Students who have difficulty counting forwards and backwards to 100 likely have difficulty counting to 100. Have them count the number line to 100 out loud. First counting forwards, and then counting backwards. They can use a visual number line as support.
