Students learn to count forward and backward to 1,000. They know which numbers belong before and after numbers to 1,000.

Students will be able to count forward and backward by ones to 1,000.
Introduction
Students must determine the order of the numbers given on the interactive whiteboard by dragging them to where they belong on the stairs. The smallest number is given.
Instruction
Explain to students that when you cross tens, that the number in the tens place changes, but that the number in the hundreds place stays the same until cross hundreds. When you cross hundreds, the number in the hundreds place changes. Show this to the students using the number sequences shown on the interactive whiteboard. Next show students how to count through 100, counting crossing tens and then crossing hundreds while counting out loud. Then count as a class from a given number. You determine when the students stop counting. Then ask students to fill in the blanks on the flags showing numbers on the interactive whiteboard. Then tell students that you can also count backward from 1,000. Count backward, pointing at the numbers and have the class count out loud with you. Count a few number sequences together. Then ask students to count backward from a given number. You determine when they stop counting. You can also ask students to count numbers by turns counting either forward or backward. Students then must determine which number completes the number sequence. It is important to have them count backward to determine this.
Check that students are able to count by ones to 1,000 by asking the following questions:
- How do you count forward?
- How do you count backward?
- Which number comes after 893?
- Which number comes before 256?

Students are given exercises in which they must count forward, backward, and they are also asked to complete the given number sequences.
Closing
Discuss with students that it is important to be able to count by ones to 1,000 because you are getting ready to learn how to calculate. Ask students to form groups and have the groups practice with counting forward and backward. The interactive whiteboard shows a row of t-shirts with numbers, but some of them are missing. Have students determine what the missing numbers are. Then repeat this with the row of balls. They are asked to count forward and backward.
Teaching tips
Students who have difficulty with this learning goal can be supported by practicing counting forward and gaining confidence with counting forward before counting backward. They can also make use of a number line. Remind them that you are only taking steps of one number.
