Conjunctions allow us to join sentences, and being able to do this grammatically is important for communicating complex ideas. This lesson focuses on the two most common types of conjunctions in English: coordinating conjunctions and subordinating conjunctions.
Understanding the difference between these two conjunctions depends on understanding the concept of an independent vs. dependent clause. It will be helpful for students to have this knowledge prior to the lesson.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.1h
Students will be able to identify and use coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in a sentence.
Students will complete sentences by dragging conjunctions to the blanks. Tell students they will be learning about coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in this lesson.
Explain that coordinating conjunctions are used when combining two independent clauses, like, "The dog was hungry and his food bowl was empty." Students will be introduced to the acronym FANBOYS to help them remember the coordinating conjunctions. They will read an example using each conjunction.
Explain that subordinating conjunctions when combining an independent clause and a dependent clause, such as, "Jane got ready quickly because she overslept." Show some examples of subordinating conjunctions, including although, because, while, and until.
Next, students will read several sentences and circle the conjunctions. They will then specify whether those conjunctions are coordinating or subordinating. They will also complete sentences by dragging conjunctions to the blanks and tell whether they are coordinating or subordinating. Students will then read a passage and highlight the coordinating and subordinating conjunctions. They will use coordinating conjunctions in sentences.
Students will respond to ten true/false, click-on-the-words, and multiple-choice questions.
Students will recall:
- What are some examples of coordinating conjunctions?
- What are some examples of subordinating conjunctions?
- Why are conjunctions important?
The acronym FANBOYS can help students remember coordinating conjunctions.
