This lesson starts with a discussion of the difference between potential and kinetic energy. It then discusses the Law of Conservation of Energy and the fact that energy in a closed system cannot be created or destroyed but instead transferred or converted between objects in the closed system.

Students will be able to explain how energy is conserved in a closed system and can be converted or transferred within/between objects.

Introduction

Students begin the lesson discussing the difference between potential and kinetic energy within the context of a roller coaster as a closed system.

Instruction

Students are asked to look at a variety of closed systems and discuss the ways that energy is transferred within those systems.

Quiz

Students are given five questions about a candle regarding the various ways energy is or is not being transferred. There are five other questions which reinforce key concepts regarding the transferal of energy within a closed system.
