A compound word is a word that is made up of two others. These types of words appear so often in our lives that we hardly notice them. By understanding how to recognize compound words, students can improve their reading comprehension by using context clues to infer the meaning of unknown words.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.4d
Students will be able to use the meaning of individual words to predict the meaning of a compound word.
Students will discuss what they think a compound word is with a partner. Explain that compound words are two words that are combined to make a new word. Discuss why compound words are important.
Students will mix and match words, like "rail" and "road," to make "railroad." Next, they will make new words using the word "rain." They will also drag words to create compound words.
These five drag-to-sort problems ask students to assemble familiar compound words. Invite a student up to give this activity a try!
Ask your students to reflect on why it is useful to be able to identify a compound word.
