Students will be able to compare and contrast the overall structure (e.g., chronology, comparison, cause/effect, problem/solution) of events, ideas, concepts, or information in two or more texts.
At the start of the lesson, students will recall what they already know about different text structures. Remind students that authors have different purposes when they write. The text structure they use to organize the text can help us determine the author’s reason for writing. Introduce the two text structures that will be the focus of this lesson.
Go over compare and contrast and cause and effect and explain that students should look for certain clue words/phrases, like “because,” “as a result,” and “due to.” After this, students will read two passages about wildfires. One will be written in compare and contrast text structure and the other will use cause and effect. Have students determine the author’s purpose and highlight the clue words or phrases in the passage. Discuss how the text structures are different and how the organization helps you determine the author’s purpose.
Students respond to 10 questions. They will read two passages and compare the text structures. They will also answer questions about the information presented in the two texts.
Students will read two texts about natural disasters ⏤ earthquakes and volcanic eruptions. They will compare the text structures while also highlighting evidence from the text. Ask how the two passages are similar and different.
