As a class, students will list their favorite authors and the reasons they like them.
Students will be introduced to Beverly Cleary, an American's children's realistic fiction author. Students will discuss the topics Beverly Cleary wrote about, such as having a pesky sibling or the first day of school. They will read excerpts from Ramona the Pest and Muggie Maggie. Students will compare and contrast the main characters, Ramona and Maggie. They will then read an excerpt from each book and contrast their settings. They will also read a Venn Diagram about the plots of the books and determine whether the statements are correct.
Students will write notes to Ramona and Maggie to give them advice on their problems.
Review the lesson with 10 questions comparing and contrasting another book that Beverly Cleary wrote: Dear Mr. Henshaw.
Have students recall what they learned in this lesson and write about a school experience. They will then compare and contrast their writing with their classmates.
