They will practice adding missing commas to letters in appropriate places and creating their own greetings and closings that include commas appropriately.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.2.2b
Students will be able to appropriately identify and use commas in greetings and closings of letters.
Students will review the function of commas. They will read a letter to Abby and name the parts of a letter.
Students will look at the parts of a letter greeting: the greeting, recipient, and comma. They will also talk about the closing in letters: the closing, comma, and sender. They will look at examples of greetings (e.g. "Hi Steve,") and closings (e.g., "From, Kelly,). Next, they will read two letters and look for missing commas. They will then take turns designing various greetings and closings for letters. They will read a letter with a body and complete the greeting and closing.
Students will review commas in letters by identifying greetings and closings and determining if the commas are placed correctly.
Have students recall where the commas should be placed in greetings and closings of letters. Students will play a spin the wheel game to practice placing commas.
