Students will be able to identify when a comma is needed and correctly add it to a compound sentence before the coordinating conjunction.
Students read two sentences and work with a partner to put them together into one sentence. They are shown how the sentences can be combined using a coordinating conjunction and a comma. Explain that the comma helps to show where the first independent clause ends and the second clause begins.
Students review compound sentences, independent clauses, and coordinating conjunctions. They are shown where to place the commas in the sentence. Next, students read sentences and practice identifying the coordinating conjunction and dragging the comma to the correct place. Then they will drag a jumbled group of words and phrases into complete compound sentences. After this, students read a passage and drag a red comma to the areas where it is needed. Then students are given a simple sentence and they must complete the sentence by adding a conjunction and an independent clause. Finally, students use the spinner and must write a correct compound sentence with the conjunction they land on.
Students respond to true or false questions as well as multiple-choice questions. They will read a sentence and decide where there should be a comma. They will also read sentences and decide whether they are compound sentences and if they are correctly written.
Students observe a picture on the board and must describe something about the picture using a correctly written compound sentence.
