Coloring decompositions to 10- abstract objects

General

Students learn to decompose numbers to 10 using coloring of abstract objects (dots).

Relevance

It is useful to decompose numbers if you want to divide something into two groups. If you want to give 5 children an ice cream come, and they are in two groups, you have to split up your ice cream cones. You decompose the 5 ice cream cones into 2 and 3.

Introduction

First count the objects with your students. Then count the dots. Ask students to match quantities to numbers on the interactive whiteboard.

Development

You can decompose numbers in different ways. Explain, using the dots, how you can decompose 5 into 1 and 4, but also 4 and 1. This is decomposing a number. If you already have one number, you count on to discover the second number. Explain that this is composing.
Demonstrate decomposing 3 dots using coloring step by step. Show that you can decompose 4 dots in different ways, by dividing them into different number bonds. Show all possible decompositions of 4. Explain that you can also switch the number bonds. Practice coloring decompositions with students when one number is given and when they need to come up with a number bond.

Check that students understand coloring decompositions to 10 with abstract objects by asking the following questions:
- What is decomposing?
- How can you see what the decomposition is? (look at the colored dots)
- Can you come up with a number bond for 10?

Guided Practice

Students use a worksheet to practice using coloring to decompose up to 10 abstract objects (dots). They us two colors to color the dots. They also fill in the missing number or come up with a number bond.

Closing

Students color decompositions and fill in the missing numbers on the interactive whiteboard. They are asked to come up with their own number bonds. Discuss that it is useful to be able to decompose numbers so you can split amounts into two groups.

Teaching Tip

Students who are challenged by this goal can be supported by the use of manipulatives while decomposing numbers.
