In this lesson, students learn about the characteristics of reptiles which include dry scales, being cold-blooded, and laying eggs. They’ll be able to identify reptiles and non-reptiles and accurately describe their features.

Learning Objective
Students will be able to describe the features of reptiles and correctly identify them.
Introduction
To begin, gauge students’ prior knowledge with a bubble map in which students add everything they already know about reptiles. Have students look at the image on the interactive whiteboard to come up with some observations.
Instruction
Explain what characteristics are and begin to list and explain the characteristics of reptiles: Reptiles have scales, they are cold-blooded, they usually lay eggs, and they have dry skin, unlike fish which also have scales. Students then drag the characteristics to the boxes on the graphic organizer. After this, students will fill in the blanks by dragging the correct words. Next, they’ll correct the circle map by dragging the incorrect characteristics to the trash can. Then drag to sort the animals into the appropriate boxes. Finally, students will complete a reptile word search with words like “snake,” “lizard,” and “alligator.”
Quiz
Students respond to ten true or false and multiple-choice questions. Students look at pictures of different animals and decide which are reptiles and which are not.
Closing
To conclude, go over the learning objective and review the characteristics discussed. Finally, students observe two pictures and write a sentence explaining if the animal is a reptile or not. They should explain their reasoning.
