Capital letters are important to understand for written communications. The most common letters we capitalize are the first word of a sentence, and the personal pronoun "I." In this lesson, this concept is reinforced with activities, diagrams, and images.

Students will be able to capitalize the first word in a sentence and the word, "I."
Students will read two sentences with no capitalized letters and discuss what they notice with a partner.
Capitalization is defined, and students will learn which letters they need to capitalize. Students will correct the capitalization in sentences. They will also drag words to make a sentence about a picture using correct capitalization. They will then write their own sentences about an image of a girl raking leaves.
Review rules of capitalization with 2 multiple-choice, 4 true/false, and 4 select-the word questions.
Reflect on why it is important to capitalize the first word of every sentence and the letter "I." Students will be asked to make a "short story" out of three related image prompts. Students should write a handful of connected sentences in the first person in order to practice capitalization.
Invite students up to the Interactive Whiteboard so that they can get engaged in this subject for themselves. On the seventh slide, students can drag capital letters onto an example sentence to practice this skill in a way that's fun and engaging.
