In this lesson, students will learn about how sunlight and shade are related. They will also learn how to identify items that would provide shade. They will do an experiment that involves working in groups to build a structure that can reduce the warming effect of sunlight.
NGSS:
K-PS3-1
K-PS3-2
Students will be able to build a structure that can reduce the warming effect of sunlight.
Students will discuss somethings they would do to cool off at the beach on a hot summer day.
The lesson will go over the sun and that it gives light and heat for living things. Students will also be introduced to shade, something humans can use to reduce the heat from the sun. Students will look at a campground scene and use a magnifying glass to find all the places where there might be shade. They will then look at four pairs of images and pick the one that would better help someone stay cool for each pair.
Students will then design their own structures to reduce the warming effect of sunlight. Students will work in groups to brainstorm, sketch, and build their designs. (Materials are listed below.) After building, students will reflect on their groups' designs with the class.
Students will review what they learned about the sun, shade, and how to reduce the warming effect of sunlight. They will select objects that would provide more shade and answer questions about the sun and shade.
Students will recall the concept of shade and the kinds of structures that are best at reducing the warming effect on sunlight. They will then look at six items and determine whether each would be able to provide shade from the sunlight.
For the experiment, students will need:
- paper
- pencils
- various building materials
- tape
- scissors
- glue
- flashlight
- object/toy to test structure
