In this lesson, students will learn how and why elements form compounds.

Students will be able to describe how electron configurations determine chemical bonding.
Students will try to make as many words out of the word "chemistry" as they can. This will be a basis for students to understand different ways that elements can bond.
Students will first be shown how they can use the periodic table to create a graphic representation of the electrons in each atom. From this, students will be able to count the number of valence electrons. Students will draw electron diagrams and identify the number of valence electrons.
They will be introduced to the octet rule (and exceptions) that dictate bonding. From here, students should begin to be able to predict how elements can come together. Students will predict whether or not elements would bond based on the octet rule.
