In this lesson, students will learn the words to the American National Anthem, as well as the history around it.
Students will be able to explain the history of the National Anthem and how the National Anthem symbolizes our nation.
Students will match the American symbols: bald eagle, the White House, the Statue of Liberty, and Mount Rushmore to their respective pictures.
Students will listen to The Star-Spangled Banner. A YouTube video is embedded so students can read and sing along to the lyrics. Tell students that today they will be learning about the history of the National Anthem of the United States. Explain that every country has its own national anthem and that it is a citizen's civic duty to know and understand their national anthem. Ask students when they typically hear the national anthem.
Students will learn and answer questions about the history of the National Anthem. Students will look up words they don’t know in the National Anthem.
Students will answer questions about the history of the American National Anthem. They will also discuss how they think the National Anthem symbolizes the United States.
Students will work with a partner to write the name of the National Anthem and as many of the words that they can remember.
