Students learn to add to 10,000 with simple numbers.
CCSS.Math.Content.4.NBT.B.4
Students will be able to add to 10,000 with simple numbers.
Have the students use the number line to make jumps of 10, 100, and 1000.
Briefly repeat the concepts of thousands values, hundreds values, tens values and ones values. Then you explain how you can add to 10,000 with simple numbers. Explain that you first see how many cubes of 1,000 you have. Then you add those together (6,000 + 1,000 = 7,000). Next you add the sheets with hundreds values together (100 + 600 = 700). Now you count the tens values, of which there are 40. Finally, you add the ones values together (2 + 5 = 7). Now you add all the numbers together: 7,000 + 700 = 40 + 7 = 7,747. Have the students solve the next few problems on their own. Next you repeat the steps that you need to take to solve a problem. The students can then solve the next few problems on their own. For the story problem, first show the students how to get the problem from the story. Then they add the thousands values, the hundreds values, the tens values and the ones values together. Afterwards, have the students solve two more story problems on their own.
Check whether the students can add to 10,000 with the following question:
- How can you add to 10,000 in steps with simple numbers?
The students first practice adding to 10,000 with simple numbers using a visual aid. For the following assignment they only have the math problem. The third assignment is a story problem.
Discuss with the students the relevance of being able to add to 10,000 with simple numbers. As a closing activity you can have the students listen to the first number and follow one of the routes shown. Each time, you listen to which number is added on. At the end of the route you can check the answer by removing the cover.
Students that have difficulty with adding to 10,000 with simple numbers can first practice by adding numbers in jumps of 10, 100, and 100 up to 10,000. Then have then add a number, for example 1,200, with the correct jumps.
