General

Students learn that affixes change the meaning of the word and can be prefixes or suffixes. They learn to determine the meaning of a new word when adding affixes to known words.

Standards

CCSS.ELA-Literacy.L.3.4b

Learning objective

Students will be able to determine the meaning of a new word when adding affixes to known words.

Introduction

Show students the sets of words and ask students if they can find any prefixes or suffixes present in the words given. You can challenge students to give definitions of the words given.

Instruction

Tell students that affixes are the group word parts that change the meaning of a word. There are prefixes, which come before the root word and suffixes, which come after the root word, but both are affixes. When they are added to a root word, they change its meaning. Demonstrate how this works with the word disagreeable, which has both a prefix and suffix. Ask students to find the affixes in the words by circling the prefix, underlining the suffix, and then drawing a line to the picture that matches its meaning. Then ask students to write the meaning of the root word and the affixed examples. Show an example and then ask students to find meaning. Give students a set of word pairs- one root word, and one affixed root word. Ask students to determine what the word pairs mean. Use the meaning of the root word to help define the affixed word. Practice determining the meaning of new words by breaking the word up, first determine the meaning of the root word, then the prefix and suffix. Have students practice these steps. Then ask students to write sentences using the words from the word bank. Then have students uncover the secret word, and ask them to write the meaning of the word. Remind them to use the same steps as mentioned before (break the word up- determine the meaning of the root word, then the prefix and suffix). Ask students to read the given sentences and determine which of the given affixes make sense to add to the given root word to complete the sentence. Have students determine the prefixes of the given words and then determine their meaning by drawing a line to their matching meaning.

Quiz

Students start with multiple choice questions in which they must determine what the root of a word is, which prefix or suffix is added, or give the meaning of a selected word. They close with filling in the meaning of a given word.

Closing

Remind students that being able to determine the meaning of a new word when adding affixes to known words makes you a better reader. As a class, spin the wheel and then choose the correct meaning from the options box. To close, have students work in pairs to see how many affixes they can attach to the root words given. Discuss the created words as a class.
